GMAC to add 'hundreds' of jobs in Charlotte

Charlotte's beleaguered financial industry is getting a shot of good news today from auto lender GMAC Financial Services
In December, GMAC received federal approval to become a bank holding company, a move that made it eligible for capital from the government's bailout plan.
With the conversion, GMAC needs additional compliance, legal and other staff that's likely to be available as Bank of America and Wells Fargo eliminate jobs in Charlotte.
GMAC provides auto loans, real estate financing, insurance and lately has been promoting its banking arm, which offers money-market savings and certificate of deposit accounts. The company was founded in 1919 as a subsidiary of automaker General Motors Corp., but in 2006 GM sold a 51 percent stake to investors led by private-equity firm Cerberus Capital Management. GMAC has been battered in the credit crunch, suffering major losses in its Residential Capital mortgage unit, once a big subprime lender.
